Pumpkin Carving 101

Pumpkin Carving 101

It's that time of year again. It's time to scour the local pumpkin patches for the perfect pumpkin, carve out the insides, create a special design on one side and display it on your porch for all to see. Pumpkin carving is undeniably fun, but it can be made even more enjoyable by following a few simple tips. This guide will help you and your fellow campers carve better pumpkins this year.

Selecting the Perfect Pumpkin

Pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes, but the ones that are unbruised make better jack-o-lanterns. Choose a large pumpkin, so it's easier to carve the details of your preferred design. Steer clear of any pumpkins with soft spots or discoloration. A sturdy stem is also a good sign that a pumpkin is healthy and ready to be carved.

Buy a Pumpkin Carving Kit

Most pumpkin carving kits come equipped with tools to help you clean the interior of the pumpkin, saws and small knives to help you carve details. Keeping a pumpkin carving kit in your Lance Camper will ensure a safer and more successful carving experience for you and your fellow carvers.

Drawing Your Pattern

One of the best ways to create a design on your pumpkin is to draw it in a series of dots, which you will connect when you begin carving. There are plenty of free carving patterns available online that you can use, but creating your own game of "connect the dots" works as well.

Carving Properly

Pumpkin carving experts suggest that you always saw patiently. Refrain from using your saw like a knife, and be sure to slide it back and forth (like a saw) instead. An impressive pumpkin requires plenty of time for you to complete the carving process. Make a lot of little cuts instead of a few large ones.

Celebrate Halloween at the Campground

One of the best places to celebrate holidays is at the campsite with friends, family and fellow campers. Fire up your Lance Camper and enjoy all of your favorite Halloween traditions at a new campground this year.
